Obituary for Patricia Hewitt

Patricia Ann Hewitt (nee Marcus), a resident of Chatham, passed away peacefully at the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance on Sunday, March 27, 2022 at the age of 91. Patricia was the beloved wife of the late Archie Elgin Hewitt (1998), and was always affectionately known as Pat to both her friends and family. Patricia was the eldest daughter of the late Albert and Myrtle (Smith) Marcus. She is predeceased by siblings Jack Marcus (Betty-Lou), Gary Marcus (Elizabeth), Marilynne Deane (Donald) and Nadine Murphy (Brian). Patricia married her sweetheart Archie Hewitt in 1949 and they set about raising their family in Bothwell — the town in which they were both born and raised. Four years later, in 1953, they welcomed their first daughter, Landis. And over the course of the next 12 years, they would add three more youngsters, completing their family. Patricia is predeceased by her eldest child Landis Gardner (James) who passed away in 2015. She is survived by her daughter Leslie and husband Mark Hauspie of St. Thomas, her son Marc and his wife Gina, of Appin, and daughter Lisa Joyce of Chatham. She is survived by sisters-in-law Betty Lou Marcus (Jack) of B.C., Elizabeth Marcus (Gary) of Alberta, and Irene Woods of Chatham, Ontario. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews on both sides of the family, to whom she was always ‘Aunt Pat’. Patricia was a formidable woman until the very end. She lived a spectacular and full life, meaning she was never without stories that were retold in unmatched detail. She loved her family and friends fiercely and unconditionally. The holidays were always a particularly magical time and it wasn’t unusual for Patricia to be feeding over 30 people on Christmas day. She was often blessed to have her mother Myrtle on hand in the kitchen, to assist on many of these occasions. Outside of being an absolute force, Patricia loved a good book, a tough crossword, and spending time with those she held close. She leaves behind eight grandchildren to whom she was truly an inspiration. She will be greatly missed by Christopher Hauspie (Andrea), Brandon Gardner, Kevin Hauspie (Gail), Andrew Gardner (Jessie), Shawna McKelvey (Cavin), Carrick Hewitt, Austen Joyce, and Fallon Hewitt (Zeke). Patricia was blessed with several great-grandchildren as well including Seth Cowley, Kayli Hauspie (Carter), Sabine Hauspie (Shourob), Tristan Hauspie, Kadin Hauspie, Amberley Hauspie, Kacie Hauspie, Conor McKelvey, and Harper Jean McKelvey. Patricia had recently become a great-great-grandmother to Lily (daughter of Kayli and Carter) and was eagerly anticipating the arrival of a second great-great-grandchild, with the recent news that Sabine and Shourob were expecting. Patricia also leaves behind her lifelong friend, confidante, and hairdresser extraordinaire, Lorraine Gill. She was predeceased by her dearest friend Maud Shepherd. The two of them were lifelong friends and supported each other through thick and thin. Patricia was the epitome of grit, joy, and warmth — she will be missed endlessly by those who knew and loved her. Cremation has taken place. A graveside service and formal Celebration of Life will be held at a later date,  location to be determined. Arrangements have been entrusted to Life Transitions of Chatham. Donations to Autism Canada in Patricia’s name would be most appreciated.
