Obituary for Herman Vellinga

Born on June 17, 1941 in Chatham, Ontario, Herman Vellinga was called home to be with his Heavenly Father on December 30, 2022.

Herman was one of eleven children, whose parents immigrated from The Netherlands. Loving husband of Fran for almost 60 years, Herman is survived by siblings Martha, John (Marg), and Robert (Willy). A beloved and encouraging father to John (Karen), Rodney (Alyssa), and Patti (Robert). Proud and active Grandpa to Kristen (Kris), Colton, Madilyn, Kyra, Claire, Grady, Hudson, and Sadie, as well as to great grandchildren Karson, Kinsley, and Khoen.

A well-travelled man who visited six continents, and whose favourite place was the Holy Land, Herman worked in the travel industry for close to 40 years. After experiencing a stroke in 2003, Herman devoted time to volunteering on the Stroke Rehab Unit at the CKHA as a light and hope to fellow stroke survivors. An active community member, Herman served as an Alderman on city council, was incredibly involved in church life, and was a founding member of the Bibles for Mission Thrift Store.

A people person, with a bright laugh and always a story or joke to share, Herman was a well known and loved man who knew someone everywhere he went.

Our family would like to express our heartfelt thanks to both the staff at the CKHA Rehab Floor and the Meadow Park LTC Home for their compassionate love and care expressed to Herman during his end of life care .

Herman will be remembered at a visitation on Tuesday, January 3rd from 5-7:30pm and a funeral on Wednesday, January 4th at 11am. Both services will be held at First Christian Reformed Church, 25 Tweedsmuir Avenue East.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages you to offer a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or Chatham Christian Schools.
The funeral will be Live Streamed at https://www.firstcrcchatham.com/livestream.html
