Obituary for Devra Sullivan (Dawson)

Devra Avis Sullivan: May 21, 1931 – August 3, 2022 Devra passed away peacefully August 3 rd at Bluewater Health surrounded by her two loving children, Candy and Kelly (Diane). She is predeceased by her son, Skip (Mary), with whom she is now resting.  Devra is survived by her beloved brother, Arlie (Dianne), and her four cherished grandchildren, Sean, Noel, Charlotte, and Rachael, to whom she will always be known as “Nana.” Notorious for her upbeat spirit, infectious passion, and boundless energy, Devra served as an inspiration – and at times, a relentless motivator – to many. Yet, Devra was perhaps most well-known for her caring nature, a quality for which she will be most remembered as a giving mother and dedicated teacher. Devra was born and spent her childhood in southern Alberta and trained in nursing in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. She relocated with her young family to Sarnia, Ontario in 1970 where she found her love of learning and earned degrees in Sociology, Psychology, and Education at the University of Western Ontario (1972-1977). Devra then began her travelling chronicles, hitchhiking across Canada before serving four months in Thika, Kenya with Canadian Crossroads International, where she set up an education program for over 1,000 people. Following her return, she moved to Calgary, Alberta where she taught at Lord Shaughnessy High School for 19 years. During this time, she published a textbook on child caregiving (1993) and continued in her insatiable pursuit of education, obtaining her master’s degree in education at the University of Alberta (1993).  Devra pursued further education until her retirement in 2000. She then returned to Sarnia to spend time with family. She spent her last six years as a resident of Fairwinds and Rosewood where she continued to be active and loved nothing more than long walks by the water with a milkshake in hand. She will be sorely missed.  Devra’s family is privately mourning and celebrating her life.
