Obituary for David Knott

It is with heavy hearts we announce the sudden passing of David John Knott, who had just recently celebrated his 74th birthday. Dave was the rock of his family.  He was a husband, father, grandfather, brother, and so much more to so many people. Dave leaves the love of his life, Lynne Knott, his cherished children, Janna Knott, and Julie and Dave Riley, and the sparkle in his eye, his granddaughter Jayden Riley. He will be missed by his sister Beverley Perrin (the late Richard Perrin), and his mother-in-law Joan Pollock. Dave will also be missed by many extended family members and friends whom he met throughout his life. Dave met friends everywhere he went.  It was just his way to help them, party with them or just have a good chat.  He met many people just on his daily bike rides, simply by saying, “Hi, how are you?!”  A conversation was always to follow.

Dave was employed by the City of Chatham for most of his working life.  Starting as a draftsman in 1969, he moved on to engineering, then the Superintendent of Public Works, and finally finishing as the Superintendent of Cemeteries until his retirement in 2001.  Retirement was not keeping him busy enough, so in 2003 Dave returned to the City and found himself in a trailer down a long road, once again saying hi and directing people with their compost at the leaf and yard depot which he also was instrumental in opening.

Family was everything to Dave, period. Dave’s passions included jumping in his pool, clothed or not, and having friends and family over to enjoy his backyard.  Dave sure loved to keep his parties fun, fireworks and all. Dave loved to travel; anywhere – from the mountains to The Rock and all the spaces in between.  Dave took all of his girls on as many adventures as he could, which lead them to desire many more travel experiences.  Scuba found him the great Canadian lakes and the warm water islands.  Dave loved travel so much, after retirement he picked long term residences as close to the water as he could get, Ipperwash, Texas, and Erieau.

Music was always playing if you were around Dave; so many concerts, including the infamous tailgate parties, becoming a parrothead, dancing the 3 step to his favourite country tunes, and sitting around the fire with anyone willing to play an instrument.

Being active was part of Dave’s everyday life, starting in his earlier years as a runner and swimmer.  He enjoyed taking part in numerous athletic activities at the “Wheels” and riding his bike as often as the weather would allow, with anyone wanting to join.   Walking the beach was something Dave really enjoyed, especially to catch those beautiful sunrises and sunsets.

Dave’s plan is to join his late angelic daughter Dawn, and his parents, Lily and Harold Knott. Those wishing to make a memorial donation are asked to consider  Heart and Stroke Foundation or the charity of your choice. All are welcome to attend a visitation on Saturday February 5, 2022 from 1-5 pm at Life Transitions (397 McNaughton Ave W. at Baldoon Rd.).
